INDIANS. JUCHITÁN. MEXICO
Juchitán, in the south of Mexico, in
the isthmus of Tehuantepec, trade and business
are in the hands of women, Zapotec Indians,
who control the economic life of the city.
They have expensive handmade suits and golden
jewellery which is passed on from mother to
daughter. They are recognised throughout Mexico
for their intelligence, bravery, skill and
audacity. Here men are hardly noticed. However
in Juchitán de Zaragoza a matriarchy
and patriarchy live under the same roof.
